nnThis intro course to the Hive 13 CNC router is open to all.nnSat. nAbove: Dustin Bruce instructs kids at the Blue Ash Branch Library making bouncy-balls with safe household ingredients. nnnVolunteers from Hive13 successfully led eight workshops with local Cincinnati Libraries, teaching kids the basics of chemistry and biology. The program, DIY Polymers, was presented at Cincinnati Public Library branches as part of their Summer Learning 2016 education series. The hands-on course taught young scientists and makers about polymers through exciting activities. Children made colorful bouncy-balls and extracted DNA from strawberries using common, safe household chemicals and reagents like school glue, dish soap, and borax laundry booster. nnAs many as 40 to 60 kids attended each of the eight events, and each left with their own DIY bouncy-ball and a sample jar of strawberry DNA they extracted. This course is just one of many educational programs Hive13 offers the community to engage interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, & math) and making. nnSpecial thanks to The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Friends of Public Library, and the sponsors of Summer Learning 2016.nnnn

Just want to stare listlessly at the magic of gooey plastic oozing into a creation?nnCome on down to this open, free event. This is an informal workshop day where anything goes. If you're interested in 3D printing (or just being a nerd in general), just bring yourself, your brain, and any snacks or accessories you might like. nnLorin will facilitate, but emphasis is on everyone learning from each other (Lorin is a professional educator, which means that he's smart, and good at rhetoric, but not necessarily the font of all wisdom on any topic). nnWe'll start up the printers and set up some movies in the lounge including the new documentary, “Print The Legend”. nnLorin will bring 2 printers he uses to teach and do workshops with:nnUltimaker 2 (provided by Schoff Foundation,and UCForward, and co-owned by UC, Hive13, and community education partners)nPrintrbot simple metal (Lorin's personal teaching machine)nCopy of Simplify3D if you'd like to try Lorin's or use Cura or whatever open source tool you prefer!nnOther Hive13 printers / resources based on availability.nnOpen and free to all.
